Since 2007, I have taught Introduction to Art Photography at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York.

For all intents and purposes APH 241 teaches students the fundamentals of camera optics while strengthening their visual perception. Structured around traditional black and white film processing and printing. The main focus is for students to learn how to create a fully tonal print. Students start by using resin-coated paper and then learn archival fiber paper printing methods.

Acknowledging the pervasiveness of digital photographic techniques, students take time away from their SLR cameras to shoot with Nikon D-70's and learn digital image workflow in Photoshop CS3.

Assignments for this class ask students to explore the decisive moment, practice portrait and self portrait, create a narrative sequence of images and finally to develop their own body of images.
